Frequently Asked Questions
Is what I share in therapy private
Yes. Your sessions are confidential. Information is not shared with anyone without your consent, except in specific situations where there is a serious concern about safety, such as risk of harm to yourself or others. In the ACT, therapists have a legal duty of care to take reasonable steps to protect clients and others from serious and imminent harm. This means confidentiality may need to be limited in rare circumstances, such as when safety concerns arise. These limits are explained clearly before therapy begins and discussed with you openly wherever appropriate.
What support does The Listening Room offer
We’re here for the "art of being human." Specifically, we support young people navigating stress and identity, couples working through disconnection, and families managing relationship strain. Every plan is tailored to your unique needs.
What methods or therapy styles do you use
Therapy draws on evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) informed skills, schema-informed work, motivational interviewing, and relationship-focused approaches for couples and families. The approach is adapted to suit your goals and preferences.
Do you offer sessions online or in person
Yes. We offer both in-person sessions and secure telehealth options, allowing you to choose the format that best suits your comfort, location, and needs.
What happens after I submit this intake form
Once you hit submit, we review your details to ensure we’re the right fit for your goals. You can expect a follow-up via your "best contact" method within 24–48 hours to discuss next steps or finalise your booking.
What’s the "Mature Minor" rule for young people seeking support
In the ACT, young people under 16 can sometimes consent to their own therapy if the counselor determines they have the "mature minor" capacity to understand the process. However, we usually encourage involving a parent or guardian where safe and possible, as collaborative support often leads to the best outcomes.
What’s the difference between The Listening Room and an emergency service
This is an important distinction: The Listening Room is not a crisis service. We are here for scheduled therapeutic work. If you are experiencing an immediate crisis or are at risk of harm, please call Triple Zero (000) or contact Lifeline (13 11 14). We will always discuss a safety plan with you during our sessions, but we cannot provide 24/7 emergency monitoring.
